"Man, today the weather finally warmed up a bit—45°F / 7°C, nice change! So I grabbed my drivers right away and headed to the driving range to swing a few. First up was the Callaway Quantum Max, 9° with the Matrix TP5HD R shaft—same setup as last time. Today I wanted to see if the warmer weather helps with accuracy and control on strikes.

My other one is the Titleist GT2, also 9°, paired with the Ventus TR Black 5S. That's my absolute favorite driver—I love the feedback and feel from Titleist woods. The head and face are all metal, compared to the Callaway's 360° carbon fiber head. So I was curious if there's a real difference in stability and precision.
Gotta say, last time I hit the Quantum Max it was like 0–2°C—body barely warmed up, swing felt stiff, grip was slipping all over the place. Today was way more comfortable, grip felt solid, no sliding, so the test should be closer to real on-course conditions.

After warming up with irons, I hit 5 balls with the Quantum Max, then switched to the GT2 for 5\. Took a break, hit some other clubs, rested a bit, then did another 5 with GT2 and 5 more with Quantum Max. By then my lower back and upper back were getting sore, so I called it good.

Starting with the Quantum Max—its feel is super unique and honestly max fun! When you catch it on the sweet spot, it's like super springy and poppy, almost like hitting a tennis racket. Ball speed is insane, it just launches—balls were flying so far I sometimes lost where they went. Next time I'll do indoor with a launch monitor to get real data on flight and numbers. Trajectory isn't super high; launch angle probably under 15°, it's more performance-oriented. Definitely different from older Callaway base models.

But here's my issue from before: control and precision on strikes. That full 360° carbon fiber makes it hard to feel exactly where I'm hitting the face. From the dispersion pattern (check the pic), my strikes were mostly center-low. On the GT2, with the metal sole, strikes were more center to center-high, which feels way more predictable and acceptable. Low-center hits add too much spin and kill distance.

Second problem: because of the carbon everywhere, I tend to deloft the face at impact—like starting at 10° but pressing it down to 8° or lower, so the ball doesn't get up enough. When I got home I swapped the sole weight from 2g to 7g (+5g) to see if it helps fix those two things. Last test was in freezing cold, this time temps were up, but still my strike location and quality sucked. This is the toughest Callaway driver I've dealt with since the Rogue days.

Now the GT2—total winner! No matter what, it feels like I'm hitting dead center every time. Super solid, compressed feel—really satisfying and lively. The "spring" is different from Quantum Max: metal face gives you that ball-compression pop, while Quantum feels like the whole face trampolines outward. Ball speed is fast too, and with the Ventus TR Black 5S it's rock steady—every shot is copy-paste identical. Same consistency I get from the Elyte or Ai Smoke.

Even my old TSR2 wasn't this consistent. Feedback-wise, GT2 is better. Honestly, hitting the GT2 feels like it's on autopilot—face stays square, launch stays the same no matter what. The metal sole is like a solid chassis on a car: keeps everything stable, launch doesn't wander, and it's way easier to control the head path. All the problems I have with Quantum Max? GT2 fixes them, thanks to that metal base making the head super controllable.

Even on mishits, the stability and forgiveness kick in to minimize damage. So yeah, GT2 is probably my 2026 starter driver. I'll still check out the Qi4D LS and the G440 Max. Actually, I'm most hyped for the G440—tons of online tests rave about it. Haven't bought a Ping since G410, so super excited for the G440 Max.

Same thing—I don't feel safe with full-carbon heads, so for the Qi4D I went LS so I can tweak the sole weights for better stability and CG. This test really clarified which shafts pair best with each head too. Bottom line: custom fitting these days needs tons of real testing to dial in the perfect combo. 2026 drivers are using way more carbon fiber, which is cool for speed, but for me the big question is how to control the overall CG and feel it.

Quick analogy: putters come in blade/Newport style vs mallet. Mallets are easier to stabilize and square up because weight is spread out. Blades need perfect precision—one tiny miss and you're done. Same idea with drivers: metal in the face, sole, and back gives strong CG support, so the face doesn't twist or change angle much on impact. But full 360 carbon heads only have metal on the face and back weight, so it's harder to keep everything under control."

“So when I got home, the first thing I did was swap out the 2g weight screw on the bottom of the Quantum Max head for a 7g one I took from an Ai Smoke head. Later I’m gonna hit some balls and see if it helps stabilize the center of gravity better. If it still feels off, my next plan is to go even heavier—maybe throw in a 10g+ screw at the back, and then take the 10g back weight from the tail section off and replace it with something lighter. Basically shifting more mass toward the rear-bottom part of the face to push the CG back and make the head feel more stable.

The Quantum Max is actually pretty solid, but the way it’s designed isn’t super friendly for your average weekend golfer. Most regular players grip the club like they’ve got no strength at all, their backswings look like a total mess, and the downswing? Total chaos—no clue what’s happening.

Yeah, that 360 carbon material is great—it boosts clubhead speed and lets you swing through more smoothly and really whip it at the bottom. But if you don’t already have decent fundamentals and some athletic ability in your body, “swinging freely and powerfully” is basically a fantasy.

All those tour pros and YouTube influencers? Their clubs are custom-tuned to death. You can’t just buy the same stick, slap it in the bag and think “boom, pro mode activated, cheat codes unlocked.” The stock Quantum Max comes in at 45.75 inches—good luck controlling that consistently unless you’re dreaming about it at night.

The real fun of club fitting and tinkering is exactly this: figuring out what your problems are and turning them into performance gains. That’s the addictive part.

Everything I test is aimed at regular golfers—not tour players, not instructors, not the experienced single-digit guys who’ve been grinding for 20 years. If you’re dealing with the same issues I mentioned, maybe some of this gives you ideas on how to tweak things yourself.

One thing you’ve gotta keep in mind: screwing up shots and making mistakes is completely normal. The real goal isn’t to never miss—it’s to stop making the same dumb mistakes over and over. The problems don’t magically disappear; you just have to build up your strengths so those weaknesses hurt you a lot less.”
