Summer is really heating up, so we had to take a trip to cool off. We don’t get to go upstate that often, so I decided to take my wife and kid on a little getaway. We picked Lake George—about a 3-hour drive—and stopped in Saratoga first to play some golf. There’s a state park here where you can hike, soak in hot springs, or play golf. I chose the Saratoga Spa Golf Course inside the park and booked a hotel nearby. I teed off early, around 6:20, because this week’s been a heatwave in New York. Even though it's cooler here than in the city, I didn’t want to risk overheating later in the round.

I rented a cart today and planned to be done before 10 AM—any later and I'd melt. I was paired with a local guy, just the two of us, and there wasn’t anyone behind us, so it was a really chill round. We started from the white tees, but after 5 holes it got a little boring so we switched to the black tees. The course has red, gold, white, blue, and black tees. White is around 6,300 yards, black is the longest at 7,145\. The guy I was with was at least 10 years younger, so he was fine playing the blacks too.

Course conditions were amazing—this is why I love playing golf in the Northeast between April and June. The fairways were lush and green, the rough was about a ball and a half tall, and overall maintenance was perfect. The layout is classic northern-style: tree-lined fairways, not much water, and some OB zones. If your shot's a little off, you’re in trouble.

The second shot is where the course really tests your skills. The greens aren’t big so you’ve got to be accurate. If you hit the green, it’s usually just a two-putt. From the white tees, most second shots are mid to short irons, so scoring isn’t too hard. But from the black tees, it’s a whole different game—none of the par 4s are under 400 yards. Second shots are usually long irons or fairway woods. But I was hitting my 3-wood like a cheat code today. Only one hole—a 230-yard par 3—I missed the green. The rest were lasers, either hitting or landing on the green.

Since the greens are small, it’s not easy to stick it. A lot of the longer par 4s basically require three shots to reach the green. Early in the morning, the greens were a little slow due to dew, but once the sun came out, they sped up to around 10 on the green speed Some pins were placed on slopes, which made putting tough—but with enough experience, even those don’t feel hard. Most of my second putts were tap-ins.

I only hit into a bunker once today. There aren’t many bunkers—most are near the greens. My accuracy was on point, so sand didn’t really come into play. The one time I did land in a bunker, it wasn’t bad—just had to hit down on the ball. The sand was medium grain, not super fine. A couple bunkers had some moisture, so they were harder to get out of. My partner took an extra shot to escape one.

To score well here, hitting fairways is key. From the tee, it might look like you’re in the fairway, but when you get to your ball, it’s in the rough. Then your second shot becomes a lot more work.

With this course’s difficulty and layout, you need solid tee shots and good approach accuracy. If you’re playing from the blue or black tees, distance and precision both matter. The biggest challenge is the trees—if your tee shot or second shot drifts, you’ll end up in the woods. And once you’re in there, attacking the green is nearly impossible. If you’re a single-digit handicap, don’t play from the white tees. Try blue or black—you’ll see where your weaknesses are real quick.

Personally, I don’t play from the white tees anymore. They don’t challenge my long irons and fairway wood game enough. I’m pretty comfortable managing yardages around 7,000, give or take 10–15 strokes depending on the round. Today the fairways weren’t rolling much, so tee shots were about 10–20 yards shorter.

I was using the Callaway Elyte driver today—super easy to hit with crazy forgiveness. On the back nine, I tried a Japanese progress BB4 driver, but it just didn’t compare in distance or forgiveness. After four holes I switched back. Honestly, in terms of distance, forgiveness, and ease of launch, American drivers crush Japanese ones. Just facts—don’t come for me!

The course conditions right now are perfect. Walking on the fairways and greens feels like walking on a carpet—so soft and dreamy. Surrounded by trees, it’s seriously therapeutic. Playing in the woods like this totally clears your head. You just can’t hold on to any negative thoughts while you’re out here. All your focus is on golf, nothing else. And with the cool breeze this morning, it wasn’t hot at all. Didn’t need to push a cart either—felt great the whole round. Later we’re heading out to explore a bit more of the area.

Finished 18 holes by 9:15 am—just 3 hours. Fast round. My playing partner knew how to play too, so we didn’t waste time looking for balls. I lost 3 balls—found one, skipped looking for the others and just dropped. One of them was deep in the trees—no hope. If we’d started after 10, it would’ve been brutal. There’s no shade out there, so if you’re pushing a cart and still don’t get heatstroke, you’re lucky!

It cost a little over $60, which is basically the base rate in NYC or Long Island—and that’s without a cart. I still rented a cart and the price was more than fair. I’m definitely planning to come back. It’s worth the 3-hour drive to enjoy this nature escape.
