當然T牌是首先，T是number one golf ball in the tour那個牌子。

Today, I want to talk about golf balls. They're obviously essential, but people often overlook how much they actually affect feel and performance. If you care about how you play and the results you get, then the ball is something you really can't ignore.

There are tons of types and brands out there, and honestly, figuring out which one suits you is way harder than choosing a club. If your technique isn't solid enough yet, it’s even harder to judge which ball fits your game. So for weekend golfers and amateur players, finding the right golf ball is really important.

Let’s start here—if you usually lose more than two balls per round, I’d recommend sticking with 2-piece balls or maybe 3-piece ones that are tournament-grade, but not too expensive. Go for something from a big brand. Of course, the first name that comes to mind is “T”—you know, the number one ball in golf. T has built its reputation over decades, and their consistency in both clubs and balls is top-notch. When you use their balls, you're pretty much guaranteed high-level performance.

Now, for those of you who are into data and numbers, you can absolutely test different brands indoors and compare the stats. But from my experience, good numbers ain't always equal to great results on the course. Indoor testing with simulators is great, but it doesn’t account for all the real-world variables. That’s why there can be a big gap between indoor data and actual performance.

Personally, when I test balls or clubs, I try to hit the same shot twice—once with one ball or club, then again with a different one. That’s the best way to compare. Even better, I’ll play one ball for the front 9 and another for the back 9 to get a clear sense of how each performs. Things like distance and ball flight really stand out over several holes, and you get a more honest feel from real play.

Right now, we’re in a kind of “blue ocean” era for golf balls—tons of options even from major brands: 2-piece, 3-piece, 4-piece, 5-piece… then there’s the cover materials, ball compression, dimple design and count—it’s overwhelming, like reading a physics textbook. On top of that, a lot of Taiwanese and Chinese brands are entering the market, and many golfers are happy to support local companies. That’s helping break the traditional brand dominance, but it also makes it harder to spot which ones are actually good.

to be continued...

I've worked in golf ball development and manufacture before, so I know a bit about the materials and manufacturing processes. Many of the Taiwan- or China-made balls go the multi-layer route for performance, profit, and to showcase their tech. But just because it’s a multi-layer ball doesn’t automatically mean it flies farther or has cutting-edge design. I’ve tested plenty of these balls myself, so I feel pretty confident saying this.

Smaller brands often lack the materials, production capabilities, and know-how of the big names. They tend to focus on offering multi-layer balls at lower prices to win over the market. That strategy helped brands like Vice and Snell climb the sales charts in the U.S. and reshuffled the OEM industry in Asia. But smaller brands still struggle to match the material quality of the big players. Top-tier materials are often only available to the big brands because they can buy in volume.

And if you’re starting with inferior materials, your manufacturing will be behind, too. Even if it’s technically a 3- or 4-piece ball, the internal build quality just isn’t as tight. You can feel the difference in the cover, too. Take T’s balls, for example—their covers are super thin, and that’s partly thanks to their patented technology. You can tell they’re miles ahead in that area.

Some small brands also claim to use soft TPU or urethane covers, but they don’t hold up in real play. After a hole or two, you’ll start seeing scuffs and cuts, even from short irons or wedges. That’s because they haven’t nailed the right blend or formula for durability and spin rate. And then there’s the paint. A lot of them just haven’t figured out how to make the paint both tough and attractive without making it too thick. That’s a real weak spot for them.

That’s why I personally stick to balls from T or other major brands—I don’t want to risk it. At the end of the day, the quality control and consistency just aren’t there with smaller brands. Sure, the lower price is tempting, but when I’m out there competing, I need tools I can count on. I don’t mind losing on style points, but I refuse to compromise on performance. I mean, who wants to be outdriven by 30 or 40 yards right from the tee box?

Once your swing is stable, your equipment becomes your foundation. That’s your edge, and you can’t afford to cut corners there.
