2021 forged irons TM P-790, Callaway Apex pro, Ping i59

2021年算是比較熱鬧，因為大家開始正常的生活，雖然還是有病毒的環繞，日子還是要過。所以球具大廠們還是緊鑼密鼓的推出新款產品。這次我測試今年最新的鍛造鐵桿，有Taylormade P790，Callaway Apex Pro，Ping i59。790和i59都是要9月才會陸續發貨。算是2022年款的新貨。當然還有Titleist T系列的鐵桿，有機會也要來測試。

首先3款鐵桿的外型都非常養眼。都是刀背外型，看得會讓人流口水。而790是唯一一款中空設計，2片式組合。桿面和主體設計，和木桿類是一樣的設計。Apex Pro和i59是典型鍛造桿一體成形。所以體積上會比較小，同時刀背上緣是比較薄。790是相對比較厚事。對於底部790也是相對比較寬。這是桿頭設計上的差異。也就是先天上的不同所導致。

再說到價格，i59是裡面最貴。一支要USD300，790和Apex pro都是USD200.另外新款的Titleist T系列鐵桿也是USD200一支。都是以鋼管桿身的價格。我實在不知道i59在貴哪裡？貴別人50% 以上，也是用一般True Temper DG105桿身。 應該是它們有訂製服務，可以依據用戶的需求去調整角度，握把和重量等。

這三隻鐵桿都是以7鐵來測試，選擇的桿身也是DG桿身為主。790 是S300 硬度和i59是R300硬度，都是105 款式。Apex pro是Elevate 115 S flex，重量上會稍微的重一點。三隻的長度都是37.25“，用golf pride的standard尺寸握把。規格上不會有太大的落差，測試的環境是室內，使用擊球模擬器是Foresign的QC 2進行數據收集和分析。

我先測試790，打到桿面甜蜜點是有彈力的反饋。不愧是2片式的設計，因為桿面是一個零件，不同於主體，所以中球會很有感。雖然談不上軟，但卻比較有趣。可以比較明顯知道你中在哪一個點上。而非甜蜜點的擊球就比較硬，很典型的鍛造鐵桿頭，如果沒有打到甜蜜點，回饋就比較不舒服。

It's the 3rd quarter of 2021, now the equipment makers are releasing the new irons to push the sales for 2021. Taylormade P790, Callaway Apex Pro and Ping i59 are the coming new gears for golfers who seek for better control and good feel in your irons. Of course Titleist releases T series and will try it later for my fans.

First of all the looks of these 3 irons are very blade style but the 790 is 2pc hollow body design with main body and face combination instead of pure 1 piece forged blade style like Apex pro and i59. The topline of the 790 is a thick one compared with apex pro and i59. The sole is pretty much similar to these 3 irons on 7i, but 790 is slightly wider than others. Personally speaking these 3 are all good design and shape, but the i59 is the most expensive one among others.

i59 is about $300 per club, 790 and apex pro are similar with $200 each club. All come with a steel shaft and upcharges for graphite shafts. It needs to see how the performance and feel are in order to know the true value of these irons. I truly don't understand why i59 is 50% more expensive than others but it might be the custom service through Ping WRX service.

I select the shafts that are similar with Dynamic Gold 105 S300 for 790 and Dynamic gold 105 R300 i59. The Apex pro stocks with Elevate 115 S flex. The lengths of these 7i are all 37.25" with golf pride standard size grip and it will be good to see the results of these irons with the similar specification. It's testing in indoor with foresign QC2 launch monitor and each iron hits 5 shots and evaluates the data.

I try 790 first and the sweet spot feedback is comfortable and bouncing from the face that you can identify which spot of the face you hit. The ball is able to bounce quickly to react to your power. Although the shaft does not react right away to feel the release, I think the aftermarket graphite shaft or high end steel shaft will help to make the 790 better and give smooth feedback.

另外桿身的回饋會比較慢，擊球釋放後才慢慢又感覺到桿身的回饋。只能說這類桿身不會給你很敏銳的回饋，同時對於下桿和釋放都無法和after market桿身的性能和回饋相比較。所以還是有空間可以去升級。

再說到測試的數據，擊球起發角度在 26~29度範圍, 桿頭速度在 75mph+-2, 倒旋量在 6000~65000rpm, 飛行距離在 130~142 碼, 滾動距離在 8~12 碼. 整體距離是145 碼 +-5 碼. 我自己的目前7鐵配碳纖維桿身是在155碼距離，所以這樣來說是可以接受的範圍，如果升級桿身和調整規格，可以達到我目前的距離需求。在性能表現上是沒有問題！

接下來測試Apex Pro。它的桿頭設計就是給人非常典型刀背設計的風格，由上看下去，刀背上緣的薄，就是告訴你它不是一般簡單的鐵桿。桿頭也小小，和790就是不同等級的鐵桿。打起來它的回饋是最軟。從以前的x forged我就很喜歡它的鍛造回饋。很像日系鍛造鐵桿的軟軟擊球。這款應該是我這幾年下來測試的大品牌鍛造鐵桿回饋最好的一款。

當然非甜蜜點的擊球就比較硬，這是鍛造鐵桿的通病。也是你要進階到刀背桿需要提升你的動作穩定性才能駕馭這樣的產品。所以它的容錯就不是太好。但對於距離效果來說，也不會太差。以下就是它的數據， 起發角在27 to 30度範圍, 倒旋量在 6500~7200rpm, 飛行距離在 130碼， 滾動距離8 to 10碼. 整體距離是 140 碼。

相較和790沒有太大差別但非甜蜜點距離就短很多。這就是刀背桿的致命傷，當然如果你有實力和力量，這都不是重點。對我這樣的一般人來說，距離是不可缺，而且犯錯和沒打到甜蜜點是常常發生的事。如果距離讓我差了20碼，我就謝謝再聯絡了。這也是我一直都沒有用鍛造鐵桿的原因。除了年輕時用過後，35歲後就不再用。因為距離是王道！

The off sweet spot is hard that is typical forged style. If you don't strike on the right spot, the feedback tells you all. That's why a forged blade is good to work on your swing accuracy. It doesn't give you too much forgiveness. With the data I get from 790 it's launch angle is 26~29 degrees, head speed 75mph, spin rate is over 6000~65000rpm, carry distance is 130~142 yard, rolling is about 8~12 yards. The total distance for 790 is 145 yards +-5 yards.

Compared to my current 7i, it is short by 5 yards since I am using the Fujikura MCI 95 S flex shaft that helps to gain more distance. Of course, if 790 upgrades to good graphite shafts will gain 10 yards distance without difficulty. 790 is not just for controlling and workability but the distance is outstanding compared with other forged irons.

Then it's Apex pro! It's small head and topline thin design. Very typical blade forged style from the top to look down the iron. The sweet spot of apex pro is very soft and I would say it's similar to Japan forged luxury iron feedback. Since Callaway x forged has good feedback in the past and the new apex pro inherited this advantage. If you look for a soft forged feel, this one should be the best feel I have tried recently.

The launch angle is a little bit higher than 790 it's 27 to 30 degrees, spin rate is 6500~7200rpm range, the carry distance is 130yards and the rolling is about 8 to 10 yards. The total distance is 140 yards. However, the misshot makes your distance 15- 20 yards short. Of course, it's forged blade style so the distance is not the first priority but I am not able to strike accurately on every shot so the forgivingness and distance are very important for me.

The off sweet spot is not as hard as 790, that's forged iron's advantage and easier to work your various ball shots. If you do not mind to lose some distance with the off sweet spot, apex pro is a good one to choose. If your swing is not consistent and solid, it's better to consider other irons since good swing is fundamental for these forged products to enjoy the benefits from forged irons.

最後是i59。它是和Apex pro差不多的桿頭大小和刀背上緣比Apex Pro要更薄設計。不好打是可以期待的是。而它打到桿面甜蜜點沒有Apex pro那樣的軟綿回饋。反而會比較彈的效果。所以這就是各家設計產品的差異。當然如果你以鍛造刀背來說要軟綿的回饋為標準，那i59可能沒有你想的那樣舒服和回味無窮。

對於數據來說，起發角度是26~29度範圍，倒旋量在 7500~8300rpm ，飛行距離在 115~120 碼, 滾動距離在6~10碼以性能角度來說，完全不及格。但對於鍛造鐵桿它就是這樣。以我的速度就是這樣的距離水平，所以我不會用鍛造鐵桿。反而用中空桿頭去達到最好的距離結果。

當然我去查這三款的7鐵桿面角度，790是31度，Apex pro是33度，i59是36度。而反應在我得到的數據來說也是合理。起發角度i59是稍微大一點。也應該說i59還是以傳統刀背桿的設計風格為主，你要沒有速度和力量去操控球桿，i59就不是你可以駕馭的產品。至少我是不會去考慮，雖然好看但沒有裡子啊！別人拿P桿打120碼，我拿7鐵打。

鐵桿是打準，至少我的動作也有點穩定。沒有距離對我來說是萬萬不行。7鐵至少要140碼，低於這個距離就很難在6500碼的總距離裡得到好成績。因為開完球，在150碼範圍是主要目標距離。如果要用上5鐵或6鐵，會相對比別人要更難了。所以鐵桿距離和你的策略、成績息息相關！

我想這三款鐵桿的特性都各有所長，也針對各自族群。使用它們技術和材質。但我覺得配置的規格和桿身會決定它們最後的價值和表現。都是有提升的空間，只是要配對和設定對就是一門學問。也摸熟了這些廠商最新的產品特性，才能知道要如何去配置。

The last one is i59. The topline is the thinnest one and similar head size like Apex pro. When I hit the sweet spot of i59 it is not as soft as apex pro but more bouncing feedback from the face. The launch angle is 26~29 degrees, spin is 7500~8300rpm range, carry distance is about 115~120 yards, the rolling is 6~10 yards. It's the shortest distance I have got and even though I strike on the sweet spot, the distance is about 130 yards maximum.

It's kind of frustrating! To play 7i can only deliver 130 yards maximum and off sweet spot can only get 120 or less. There are many times I feel I strike very solid with good feedback but the results are just 120 something yards. I would not consider i59 to play as I need the distance to compete and it's my core weapon of the irons to play.

However, I refer to the specifications from 790, i59 and apex pro, it's 31 degree for 790, 33 degree for apex pro and 36 degree for i59. That's why the distances are so different but the launch angle is still within the 26~30 degree range. Of course, strong loft will gain some distances but the trajectory is similar with these 3 irons. With my experience, it's the design of the head, material and technology differentiations.

The i59 is not good on pricing, and performance. The best one is 790 on pricing, performance and forgivingness. Apex pro is good on feel as it's outstanding and comfortable feedback drives your forged spirit to the top. The answer is simple for golfers to select.
