一個前提是,我所說的桿身都是以aftermarket(桿身品牌自己生產銷售產品),不是貼牌的OEM/代工產品。
我在過去20年裡,使用過Matrix/LAGP(全系列)、三菱(部分系列)、Fujikura(Speeder和Ventus)結合為主的桿身品牌,所以得到一些經驗和結論。

With the rapid advancement of golf technology, we can clearly feel that clubs are becoming easier to hit and more forgiving than before. This is especially true for the clubheads. But when it comes to shafts, have they improved just as much? I did write the same topic in the past, but it's the update of recent 10 years shaft's development. To put it another way, are shafts just as important as heads when it comes to making modern woods easier to hit and more forgiving?
For most golfers, it's hard to really analyze or feel the difference in shafts—especially if you don’t have access to a lot of different woods, or if you haven’t tried the same model with both older and newer shaft versions. Sometimes even the same shaft model and weight can perform differently just because of its version and generation.
So in short, unless you've tried a wide variety of shafts, it’s not easy to truly understand their differences. I’ve been using Fujikura shafts for the past 20 years, especially the Speeder series and, more recently, the Ventus series over the last decade. I’ve gained a lot of hands-on experience with them, and I’d like to share some of my insights. I also often pair older shafts with new clubheads to compare how they perform as a full setup—this helps me better understand the real performance of each component.
Over the past two decades, I’ve mainly used shafts from Matrix/LAGP (all series), Mitsubishi (some series such as Diamana), and Fujikura (Speeder and Ventus). From that, I’ve learned one thing: there’s no such thing as a “good” or “bad” shaft—only the right or wrong fit for you. The right shaft depends on your swing style and how you use your clubs. It also needs to match the characteristics of your clubhead, and be suited to your physical condition and ability. You need all of those elements working together—just buying an expensive shaft doesn’t guarantee great performance or feel.
Only when your club setup is dialed in correctly can you really start to notice the differences between older and newer shaft designs. If your specs aren’t right—if the clubhead doesn’t suit you, or the shaft weight or stiffness is off—you won’t be able to feel what the shaft is truly capable of. I’ve built a number of drivers, fairway woods, irons, wedges, and putters. Most of the time I receive great results, but sometimes a setup just doesn’t work—it doesn’t feel right, and the performance drops off compared to other clubs.
That’s why I often go back and tweak the shaft settings to find the best performance—changing the clubhead, adjusting the shaft length/ the flex, tweaking the overall weight, or swapping grips with different materials or weights. And the results can be drastically different. It’s like giving a shaft a new life. So don’t overlook the small details in your club setup—a wrong choice or setting can completely flip the feel and performance. Because when I swing a club, I can immediately sense which part isn’t right and know what needs to be adjusted or improved.

這是我長期使用Matrix/LAGP,Fujikura Speeder/Ventus桿身的結果。

Once you’ve found a fairway wood that really works for you, the next step is to get your hands on the previous year’s version of the same model—with the exact same shaft weight, flex, and type—so you can set it up to the same specs. That way, you can actually do a proper side-by-side comparison. Of course, you can fine-tune specs within a small range to optimize for performance, feel, and control.
But if the differences in setup are too big—say, more than half an inch in length, over 10 grams in weight, or one full flex grade off, or even using a grip with a very different feel—then you’re going to end up with a club that feels and performs quite differently.
Now, all this assumes you're using the same club head, otherwise you won’t be able to properly compare how the shafts themselves behave. From my experience, shafts made 10 years ago—if they weren’t built with high grade module of carbon fiber—are much harder to optimize in terms of strength and durability. They also don’t last as long. Simply put, they tend to go soft more easily and generate more spin rates, both backspin and sidespin, which will affect control and performance. I’ve learned this over years of playing shafts from Matrix/ LAGP, and Fujikura’s Speeder and Ventus lines.
Ventus is one of the newer designs and uses high grade module carbon fiber—70-ton and 40-ton carbon fiber sheets —so there’s not a huge difference between newer and older versions of the same model. For example, I compared the 2024 Ventus Blue 50 in stiff flex with the 2021 version of the same spec. In terms of performance, the older one produced about 10–15% more spin. As for feel, the older shaft gave more pleasant feedback, while the newer one felt a bit stiffer—because it’s been reinforced—but it also gave me about 5–10 more yards of distance.
The newer version also reduces left-right dispersion on mishits, which is a very practical benefit. But again, the feel just isn’t quite as nice as the older version. I tested both shafts with Callaway driver heads—Rouge ST Max, AI Smoke, and ELYTE—and got the same results across the board.
This is just one example from my recent tests with the same shaft line. Over the years, I’ve compared tons of shafts—old and new models, variations in weight and flex, all kinds of combinations referred from peargolf.com
Actually, most shaft manufacturers will publish detailed info each year about how their new shafts differ from the previous models. And if the new ones were exactly the same, there’d be no reason to make a switch. So the new versions are usually upgrades, aiming to improve areas where the previous model fell short. That could mean reinforcing different parts of the shaft—like the tip, the midsection, or the butt—or using stronger materials, or tuning the launch to be lower.
But at the end of the day, everyone needs something different. Maybe you want more spin and a higher launch. So when customizing your gear, the key isn’t just about whether the shaft is new or old—it’s all about what you need as a player.

It's rare for a shaft to stay exactly the same between old and new versions — there's always going to be some kind of change. From my experience, sometimes the current model is quite similar to the one from two years ago. That kind of minimal generational difference does happen — I’ve seen it with Matrix shafts, but not really with Fujikura. Fujikura’s Speeder series comes out with new models every year, and they always tweak something — whether it’s the launch characteristics, shaft stiffness, feel, or the bend profile. So to me, even though they’re all called “Speeder,” each version — like Speeder I, II, III, IV, V, VI, etc. — is basically a completely different shaft.
Even when it’s technically the same model, shaft makers usually add slight differences to the name if it’s a newer year — like adding “Tour,” a symbol, or something like that. Sometimes they just change the cosmetics, like the paint job, while keeping the main structure the same. For example, Matrix (or LAGP) used to have their Red, White, and Black series, and later the TPHD series. So you might ask — should I buy the new version or the old one? The prices are usually about the same, though they might vary depending on the shop.
Like I mentioned, there are definitely performance and feel differences between new and old models, so it really comes down to your swing style and what you’re looking for in a shaft. That said, I always recommend looking for shafts that are primarily made with high-module carbon fiber. If a shaft is designed that way, even the older and newer versions will still use high carbon — the difference will just be in how they mix different carbon tonnages and how they distribute the strength throughout the shaft. It's also a good idea to read the product descriptions carefully to understand each model’s characteristics — don’t just assume the new one feels or performs the same as the last generation. You’ll likely be wrong.
Technology has really advanced, and that’s made a big difference in shaft materials. Newer shafts definitely give you noticeable feedback and performance changes. And just to clarify, I’m talking about aftermarket shafts — the ones sold by shaft brands themselves — not the OEM versions that come stock from club brands. OEM shafts just aren’t in the same league as aftermarket ones, especially in terms of materials and performance, even though they may share similar names.
At the end of the day, the shaft plays a huge role in both how your shots feel and how they perform. Whether it’s launch height, ball speed, spin, roll, or overall feel — it all comes down to the shaft. You can’t treat old and new models as the same — even if they look similar. A lot of golfers like to stick with the same series, but even then, it’s smart to test out the different year versions. Even within the same line, changes from year to year can be significant. If you don’t try them out first, you could end up with something that just doesn’t work for you.
