高爾夫球的小心得！

最近在Indoor進行不同測試。有對球桿，也有對球。而今天我想要分享現今高爾夫球的一些想法和測試心得。當然我自己在球這塊有一些生產、行銷經驗，所以寫出來的東西會比較不同於一般媒體或網紅們的評論。而我儘量不去提什麼品牌和生產商，因為說不好，怕被廠商吿或惹來不必要的麻煩。

我測試的球款是以一般2層球和三層球為主。不是以大品牌的球，是以小品牌的球款，皮有Urethane/TPU，也有一般Surlyn。因為這一塊的球款是市場的主力，也是一般球友會去購買價位。那種超過USD35的我就不會去測試。大多都是USD30以內為主。多數是台灣和韓國代工生產的產品為主。後面我會陸續去測試一些中高價的品牌球，來和大家分享。

基本上，我自己測試，每一款球測試5～6球，每天測試3款球，使用Taylormade SIM2 10.5度Fujikura Ventus Red 50 R， 44.5寸。測了大概一週時間，我覺得有些不錯的2層球表現出來的效能和距離，會和多數三層urethane球皮的球款差不多或更好的結果。而普遍3層urethane或surlyn的球款都是表現不錯的距離效果。2層的球，好壞球款，距離落差會有10碼的空間。有些會超過10碼以上，所以選對很重要。

2層和3層的球在木桿/球道木距離差異在10碼左右，而如果沒有打到桿面甜蜜點，3層的距離會更好。也就是說，3層球的距離效果最棒。我也試了目前很多球標榜超軟硬度的球款，打起來都太軟，倒旋會超過1萬轉，側旋也是恐怖的嚇人（每一球都來來大左曲），我還以為我打網球。所以一個結論，如果你的開球距離超過200碼，就最好選球的硬度在60以上。低於60的效果和操控都很烙賽。

而我打Taylormade有一款Distance +，上面寫韓國製造，那款的距離真的和3層球不相上下。數據出來讓我嚇一跳。試了2次，都是差不多的結果，飛行距離和滾動都和3層球並駕齊驅，讓我很滿意。在美國走低價的TopFlite系列的就挺鳥。距離短，手感不好，操控也很弱。看來一分錢、一分貨。應該和它的技術有直接關係。現在Top Flite是Dicks sporting goods的，所以應該只是有這個品牌，沒有投入研發太多吧。可惜了！

Recently I have been trying to test various golf balls and golf clubs in door to see the differentiations on results. Today I would like to share what I have got for mid range golf ball pricing from $10 ~$30/per dozen with 2 piece and 3 pieces in surlyn or urethane/TPU covers. I would not say anything specific on the brand or model to avoid the later problem.

Basically I hit 5~6 balls per round with one model ball and each day I try 3 models of golf balls. Consistent testing one week to see the overall results. Sometimes my swing gets better result and sometimes it's not consistent. That's why I review one week results to make the right comments on the golf balls.

I use Taylormade SIM 2 10.5 loft / Fujikura Ventus Red 50 R flex 44.50" long driver. I found one good 2 piece suryln cover ball that is outperform than other 3 piece TPU cover ball. The biggest differentiation of 2 piece ball surlyn cover and 3 piece urethane cover ball is the distance consistency. 3 piece urethane/TPU cover balls have consistent distance on carry that is better than 2piece surlyn ball.

But the 2piece surlyn ball with greatest and consistent distance is Taylormade Distance + ball, it is able to have similar carry and rolling distances like other 3piece urethane/TPU balls. That's really impressive me! Most of 2 piece surlyn balls are short about 10 yards overall with 3piece urethane/TPU balls. There is only Distance + ball (Made in Korea) has similar result and performance like 3piece ball.

That's the good 2 piece ball can performance and if you think the balls are the same. You are wrong, all the details can make up a big different. In golf ball, 10 yards different is big and I would rather to spend $20/per dozen for Distance + instead of $30 or more with less brands 3 piece urethane balls. For other TopFlite balls or soft compression (compression 60 or less) are not good.

Distance is short with 3piece urethane/TPU balls over 10 yards and compression below 60 is way too soft with lots of compressing during the impact. It's always big hook with over 10K side and back spin rates. If your tee shot is over 200 yards, it's better to pick the compression over 60 to 100. It's going to generate the ideal spin rate for your swing speed.

其他的一些小品牌我就不去列出來，因為多數都是台灣代工。代工的就是那幾家，同時我也打了台灣幾個小工廠做的三層球，我得到的結果是，手感、效能、距離基本都在一個水準，但還是可以分出差異和技術實力。有的工廠在球窩的模具和表面處理都是很不錯。但在裡頭的球心實力就明顯和一兩家有差距。所以從外表看不出一個球的實力和效能。尤其是性能這塊。

以高爾夫球來說，球心是引擎。一個球可以飛多遠和滾多遠，球心是決定性的因素。所以球心好，基本這個球就不差。就算皮輸其他對手，一樣都ko掉其他對手。而這樣的球飛的穩定性也最好，失擊的距離損失也沒有其他對手要大。有些球款非甜蜜點的距離掉比較多，最好就每球都打好，不然會從天堂掉到地獄裡。

一般人非甜蜜點的擊球比例遠高於甜蜜點。球如何表現是大家要在意。因為打到甜蜜點距離效果幾乎測試球款都差不多。好壞球款就差在這裡，球心的飛行能量非常關鍵！擊中甜蜜點的能量傳送上是最大，但非甜蜜點的能量遠不如甜蜜點的高，而在能量打折下，比的就是球心的能量傳送效率上。好的球心和甜蜜點的飛行效果是有限的差距，讓你就算沒打好，距離一樣站的住腳。

多數用TPU射出的或鑄造urethane的球款，都會有球皮軟，倒旋多的狀況。這導致落地滾動效果比較差（也就差幾百轉）。我打的木桿數據大概是落地角度在40度+-5度，urethane/TPU球皮的可以滾20碼左右，最多25碼。而球心好就算是surlyn球皮，隨便就是30碼的滾動。所以我個人對TPU/Urethane球款從以前就不迷信。我如果自己打球，都是用2層或3層的surlyn球。因為距離更好。

有人會說Urethane/TPU是在鐵桿和短桿上，可以得到不錯的落地倒旋，而手感也會不錯。但我的經驗是手感基本差不多。我會不去挑球的硬度太硬的來比較。多是在70～90的硬度，比較適合我的速度力量。我測鐵桿用7鐵，不管用Urethane/TPU，還是surlyn得到的落地角度都差不多，滾動也差不多。不存在urethane就比較會停球的狀況。我下場打也是一樣的結果。當然頂級球款就不一樣！

For less known brands I do not list since most of them are made in Taiwan or Korea. I tried some of Made in Taiwan balls with 3pc urethane/TPU cover balls, I get similar results on distance, feel and performance. However there is one or two balls can be outperformed others in overall results. The key is in the golf core as a good golf core can make the distance longer, fast speed and consistency.

Of course, some golf Taiwanese golf ball makers have good dimple styles with smooth ball surface, but in terms of the performance, we can see who is good or bad easily. The off sweet spot shots are critical to see the differentiation on the distance among the OEM golf balls. The good golf balls can have least impact and distance losing on off sweet spot shots. That tells you the golf core is driving so efficiency on flighting.

The Titleist golf ball is number one without doubt, their balls are so consistency on off sweet spot shots compared with other golf balls. As the average golfers, hitting it on the sweet spot is not an easy job, off sweet spot shots will be important for you to maintain your best performance and score. The same as golf club quality and performance, off sweet spot shots are always the key indicator to evaluate the product's quality, technology and design.

A good golf core can deliver the maximum distance on the off sweet spot shots, it can be compared through the launch monitor's data. Even though using the urethane/TPU cover, it will generate more spin rate than surlyn cover balls with about 20 ~25 yards rolling. However, surlyn cover ball can get more rolling since the cover is hard with less spin.

That's why I play surlyn ball as it gives me great distance. Of course, the urethane cover is good on iron and wedge shots for more spin to stop on the green. With my testing, surlyn balls has similar back spin rate as TPU/Urethane cover balls. Since I pick up the golf ball compression from 70~90, it's good to see how all the golf balls feedback, spin rate and rolling. The data tells me that slightly different on the spin but big different on the rolling.

我也把球切開來研究，基本上球心比較好的球，球心的技術確實不一樣。有用到比較多種的混搭原料，其他的球心基本上數十年如一日。以前我知道的就是這樣的配方，現在還是一樣。沒有突破和創新。就是做的美美地，“看”起來高級就好，反正你也打不出來。韓國的球心也是有混搭效果到位，掌握正確的原料觀念。

就我知道，一兩個代工廠的開發人員是很積極，會不斷問原料商很多原料問題。這才會進步。再過幾年就可以把差距給拉開。球心是一門很深的學問，牽涉到化學和原料變化。不同原料混合後會有什麼變化，加多少和怎麼加都會影響結果，所以很多廠商是不輕易改變配方，尤其是大品牌的主流產品。

如果老闆沒有放手讓開發人員去試，那是不可能有進步。加上很多技術人員是不會打球，就會有多做多錯，少做沒錯的心態。我測試的球款價格空間在USD10～30範圍。也是多數球友會購買的預算。因為如果你的動作不穩定，技術還不到一個火候，掉球機會很大，而球的費用如果買超過30美元，就會消耗很大。

就我個人的下場經驗，美國不像台灣或中國，可以有球僮幫我看球和找球。這邊打球如果不要讓其他球友等或後面組不爽，基本上球不見或沒找到的機會很大。我基本上要打出界的機會不大，但多半會找不到球。因為我有近視100度左右，球飛到超過200碼就很模糊了（溫度超過30度）。一場球下來會消耗2～4個左右。所以一個月買一打球算合理，所以費用可以控制在30以內是最好。

另外，打球多年的人都會有習慣的用球。要不就是像我清楚球款的特色和優缺點，買性價比高的產品，沒有品牌或產品迷思。因為一款球距離、手感和操控如何，打幾個洞下來就知道。雖然沒有電子測距離機，但看碼數樁也可以抓出距離和球的倒旋能力。而在廣大的球海裡，哪款球適合你，千萬要有時間和耐心去用，別人用的好，對你不見得會好。上面的資訊可以給你一些參考，相信你的直覺和經驗，才是王道！

I used to cut the ball off to check the inside that is able to see the construction. This approach is able to evaluate the ball manufacturing technology, quality and abilities. Basically the OEM balls are similar on the golf core and one or two balls have good golf core as the core has mixed materials to create better energy and bouncing.

Others are the same as what I have known in the past without making the move for the core technology and recipe. Some OEM makers are focusing on the cover and coating to present the best appearance in order to get the orders, but to make your balls become better performance is the key to stay long run.

As far as I know lots of R & D guys in golf ball companies don't play golf at all, they are doctors in Mechanical and Chemistry. If the top managers are not opening for R & D to try various recipes and materials, it's hard to get the progress and movement in core technology. I heard the material suppliers told me couple of golf ball makers in Taiwan asking a number of questions for the materials.

With these questions, they are eager to make the movement and experiments for new materials on the core development. That's a good sign for improving the ball technology instead of buying or developing the new dimple molds for better looks on the ball appearance. Golf core is the indicator to see what.level of a golf ball manufacturer is positioned and skilled.

For me the ideal ball cost is about $20/dz ~ $30/dozen. With this price range, I am looking for 2pc and 3pc surlyn or urethane cover balls. However, the performance and consistency are critical for me to make the selection. Therefore, golf core is key to determine the right golf ball for me to play. Be aware of the 2pc ball is not always the less performance product, if the golf core is good, it's outperformed other multilayer urethane balls for sure! That's what I get from the test.
