高爾夫球皮的材質軟硬是否真的有差？

現在高爾夫球的球皮有高檔的優力辛/Urethane,和目前低階的Surlyn球皮兩種。目前當然是Surlyn低階產品為主流。高階球款配Urethane軟皮是各大品牌有越來越多的產品出現。所以說，對於一般球友來說，是否值得去考慮購買Urethane球款還是Surlyn便宜球就好？這是本文想要來討論。

首先說Urethane和Surlyn的差別？以材質來說，Urethane是和大家在練習場打的單層練習球是一樣的軟硬度類似材質。而單層練習球本身材質是相對軟。所以我們在練習場打單層練習球，是可以得到比較多的倒旋量。手感比較舒服。

因為單層的球，本身的效能沒有雙層和多層的球款好，但耐用的特性是單層練習球的好處。所以單層球多半是練習球為主。

我以前有開發單層球性能可以和雙層或多層球一樣性能，但市場對單層球的印象，很難被市場接受。所以技術來說，單層可以做到高性能，只是市場主流不想改變。

其實大家可以去用手指去摳單層球，多層urethane球和雙層surlyn球的軟硬度，就可以知道表皮材質的軟硬差別。Surlyn的材質硬度就如同一般塑膠材質一樣。所以我們打Surlyn球，很容易桿面會產生球痕。尤其鐵桿和短桿很容易把皮給刮下來。

刮桿面另一個角度就是傷桿面。打久了，桿面很容易會磨滑。這也是我下場打球不喜歡用surlyn球。因為容易傷桿面。因為硬的材質和硬材質碰撞就是比誰硬。輸的人就會被硬的人刮一層皮。這就是硬道理！

那Urethane球會這樣嗎？你可以觀察在練習場打單層練習球，你的桿面可以有球痕嗎？答案很簡單，不會！因為材質雖然軟但材質的韌性高，所以不會被刮皮。而Urethane也是同樣特性。當然短桿就有機會刮皮。

不過，Titleist的Pro V1/V1x球皮在近幾年有改配方，所以更不容易被刮皮。10年前的Pro V系列就容易刮皮。這是技術改善差別。在材質加入一些提升韌性特性的元素，改善皮容易磨損狀況。

The differentiations of golf ball covers!

Nowadays there are two main different golf ball covers: one is surlyn, the other is urethane. The affordable 2/3 piece tournament is mainly equipped with surlyn cover and luxury 3/4/5 piece tournament is come with urethane for better performance and control.

They all target different golfers for specific purposes. For advanced golfers, they ask more about the control, performance and short game spins. the urethane ball is able to provide these features. On the other hand, surlyn ball is for entrance and high handicappers with cheap, durable and colorful features.

In north America, the driving ranges are using 2 piece ball, but in Asia, and Europe are mainly using one piece range ball. The one piece range ball is one layer structure, the core and cover are all the same material. It is durable, soft and good feel. Urethane cover is similar with one piece range ball features.

Although I developed good performance of 1 piece ball in the past, but the market is not accepted one piece ball can have similar performance as other 2 piece and 3 piece balls. One piece has lots of advantages to use. Maybe one day in the future, major brands will sell one piece tournament balls.

Surlyn cover is hard like plastic, therefore, it's easier to be scratched on the golf club face. With certain of playing times, the club face will be burnished with less spin rate. That's why I do not like to use surlyn balls. It would damage and burnish the club faces (woods and irons).

Urethane is soft on cover with thin layer, it is advanced technology for production. With thin cover and big core design, the ball can perform better, but deliver outstanding spin rate and impact feel. That's why pros and advanced golfers like it. It has more control for the ball and do various ball trajectories.

It's better urethane cover strongness for Titleist Pro V1/V1x without scratching. The previous Pro V1/V1x cover (10 year ago model) is less durable and easier to scratch. Since Titleist R&D has made the improvement on urethane cover. I always study and test the various golf balls to see the differentiations. Golf cover is important for golfers to know more. It certainly makes your play differently!

再說球的結構這塊，球皮薄和軟，可以在短桿或鐵桿，提升倒旋和側旋量，卻不影響性能效果。這對短桿的停球能力和手感是有絕對關係。

皮薄、球心大，可以讓擊球能量和效能提升到最大。也是Titleist Pro V1的產品設計。這樣的設計基本就是目前球的主流模式。當然皮薄有個問題，就是生產的精度要很高。

如果有偏心，就會影響飛行方向和旋轉。當然你無法看到內部，就不知道這部分的狀況。同時如果皮太軟，很容易刮皮，導致球皮不耐打，影響擊球的飛行和推桿滾動。

球皮的材質軟硬，對於使用是有絕對的影響。但如果你的鐵桿和短桿還沒有到一個火候時，是無法瞭解這當中的差別。但如果你的鐵桿也打得不錯，那對於上果嶺的這桿就要在乎。也要能停球。

加上台灣的很多球場果嶺都偏硬。有些球場的果嶺又小，所以要能讓球更好更容易去停球，urethane是目前球款來說，最好的一種解決方案。至少我個人使用是落地一個彈跳可以停球。

我個人從6年前就開始打urethane球皮的球。回不去打Surlyn球。不管在手感，效能和倒旋量都完勝。不見得一定要名牌球，台灣一些製球工廠出的產品也是不錯的選擇。

當然性能和穩定度也是有差別，因為有研發和生產技術問題。如果有機會可以拿一些球場撿到的滷蛋球，是urethane皮的產品，剖開來看結構就知道產品好壞。

我都會這樣做來研究和瞭解這些公司的製造技術和水準到哪個層級？當然我測試他們的球都是全新球。往往打幾洞下來就會發現一些問題。當然如果你對細節不是太在乎，是可以忽略這些問題。至少價格是可以購買的優勢之一。

With thin and soft golf ball cover, it's good on irons and short game for more spin rate and feel. For woods, the big golf core, it can squeeze the best performance. That's why big core with thin and soft cover is the trend for golf ball development.

If you play hard and small green, it's important to have soft urethane cover to make the ball drop and stop. You need to know what course feature and characteristic you deal with? Then find the best gears and balls with you to overcome. Particularly Taiwan golf courses' green is hard and barely to make the ball stop on the green.

Since Pro V1 is big core with thin/soft cover, it becomes the standard of high quality and good performance golf ball pattern. However, the thin urethane cover is big challenge for manufacturing. The production tolerance on urethane cover is very small. If the inside layer of golf ball is off center, the ball will not flight straight with unstable side spin rate.

It's unable to know the ball's centrolization when you buy the new balls, unless you cut the ball off to check the inside of the golf ball. You can only find good reputation of golf ball brands to get the best quality of urethane cover balls. Titleist is very detailed on golf ball production with a number of check-point for each station. This way can make sure the ball with right specification and quality. That's why their ball asks for premium prices.

I have been playing urethane cover ball for over 6 years, and trying over 20 ball types then come out to the few models I am currently using. It's hard for me to play surlyn cover ball as the feel and performance are unable to match my expectation. It's not required to play branded urethane balls, some Taiwan ball makers products are good as well to play.

基本surlyn的球皮無法做到像urethane那樣的薄度。因為射出的製程需要一定的厚度才能生產。材質的軟硬會影響射出的可塑性。當然技術好的工廠是可以射出薄的Urethane球皮。

台中Trust這款球就是射出型的Urethane。是目前射出urethane裡很薄，技術含量是很高。大廠也最多就是這樣水平，甚至還沒有這樣的精準度和穩定質量。因為如果機台校正沒有到位，模具有耗損，頂針等有問題，球皮射出就會偏掉。肉眼看的出偏心就是非常大！打起來一定會偏掉。

Titleist和台灣Foremost都是用鑄造，球皮材料液態灌入模具裡。需要比較長時間等待球皮冷卻，所以產能很有限。好處是灌注型球皮穩定性和精準度高，球皮也可以比較薄。但不是不會偏心，一樣會。機台、模具都需要精準校正和保養。

所以對於擊球效能上會影響。以效能角度看，Urethane的皮薄大球心，都是完勝surly 球款。當然看每個人的預算和需求。如果你常掉球，球的費用越少會是比較恰當。

如果你的技術是進階，在100桿以內。是可以選用大球心薄皮的Urethane球款。當然市面有很多品牌款式產品，價格也有差別。也是可以依據需求來決定。如果你買1000臺幣/30美元以上的球款，質量不好，球會偏心，飛不穩定，距離不好，那就當冤大頭。

所以小品牌或台製球款，價格合理，產品就算差一點Pro V1都是可以接受。Titleist的做球非常細心，質量穩定性很高。價格高是有其道理。我對製造高爾夫球有瞭解，也知道哪些球款和製球技術的水準是有心得，對於哪些公司的產品是比較有信心。

最後，滷蛋球性能有沒有差？一定會有差。因為你不知道這球在水裡或土裡待多久？球表面和內部有沒有化學變化？我比較過全新和滷蛋Pro V1，在距離和手感上都會有些微差異。不是表面好好或一點磨損是最好的狀況。

當然我覺得如果買滷蛋Pro V1，我會買不錯的台製urethane產品。價格差不多，性能會比較穩定且到位。就算性能沒有全新Pro V1，但至少打起來可以穩定發揮。因為我還沒有像Pro那樣可以打到很細微差異。

不管是大廠，台廠或滷蛋球款，只要能符合你個人擊球習慣和預算就好。產品沒有對錯，只有適不適合的問題。不適合的產品，不管價格多貴你也無法發揮出最好的結果。但你必須要去測試、使用不同產品才能知道真正瞭解產品效能。不需要在意別人的看法。你覺得好就是好球！

Of course, there are some details of differentiations, if you do not care the details, it should be good for you to save some money. I did study and research some multi-layer urethane cover balls, Titleist is still the best in golf ball. Other peers are hard to compete in consistency and performance.

In terms of manufacturing, inject urethane ball is hard to make in accuracy of ball centralization. Since the cover is thin, and one millimeter off center of golf ball cover will make the ball flight inaccurately and inconsistently. However, Trust golf ball (Taiwan brand) is good on injection urethane cover with my research. The ball structure is similar with Pro V1, but the cover is injected instead of casted. That's the impression from its injection technology and injection accuracy.

Casting requires longer time to cool the cover material temperature and it will drag the production volume to the minimum. However, the cover can make as thin as possible compared with injection urethane. But some Taiwan made casting urethane cover balls are off center with my research. Casting doesn't mean easy to make it thin, the production technology, molding, and casting machines are all important factors for the accuracy in production. It is still hard for Asian makers to make as good as Titleist standard and quality.

As a result, you need to get fit for the golf ball in order to play the best. Like the golf clubs, the golf ball needs to be your spec, your requirement and your preference. Not everyone needs performance and distance, if you can drive over 280 yards, you may look for better control, forgiving and playing feel. For average golfers, the right golf ball will help you play with confidence and save your misshot. That's why when I play with my urethane ball, I know what I can do and even I misshot, the ball still can stay on the field.

If your handicap is within 25, the bigger core with thin urethane cover ball may help you get more distance, more spin rate on irons and better hitting feeling. There are a number of ball models you can try including some brands made from Taiwan golf ball manufacturers. The cheaper balls doesn't mean it's less quality or flight inconsistency. Even major brand balls have the problem on off center issue in golf core and cover.

You need to try it, if the balls are not as good as you expect, cut it off and see what's going on from the inside of the ball. You might find something! You can check the cover thinness, core size, ball weight, centralization, and smell the core. If the ball core doesn't smell good, that means the material should mix up with other non golf ball ingredients. Since using cheaper material or mixed other industry's recycle material can save the cost of the core.

If you just cut one ball, you barely know anything. You have to cut two or more in order to compare. Of course, cut various ball models to check. It will give you something.

One last thing is used or refurbished ball, it's the way for saving your pocket but if you are a detail or feel sensitive golfer, going for the new one. Some Taiwan golf ball makers or OEM products are good in pricing. Used ball condition is hard to control and moisture may get into the ball inside to effect the energy delivery. New coating might make the ball flighting time less than before. Since the coating thickness is effected the aerodynamic for the ball dimples.

There is no right or wrong on the golf balls. If you can find the best fit of the golf ball for your swing. You do not need to care others' comments or opinions as they are not the person to play the ball. To find the right ball, you have to try many products, or find the experienced golf ball fitter?
