Using a wedge is all about real hands-on experience!
A lot of golfers struggle with getting the most out of their wedges. In golf, the two clubs that really depend on your personal experience and how you handle them in different situations are the wedge and the putter. Why? Let’s break it down. With woods, like your driver, you’re usually hitting off a flat tee box—pretty straightforward, no big challenges. Fairway woods? Mostly used on the fairway, sometimes in the rough, but you can usually read the situation easily. Irons are versatile; you use them in all kinds of conditions, and it’s more about your skill and technique.
Wedges, though? They’re used in a wide range of tough spots—bunkers, rough, trees, fairways, you name it. Often, you’re pulling out a wedge when your second shot goes off the GPS and you need to save the hole. So, using a wedge really leans hard on your experience and feel. For the first 15 years of my golf game, I focused on my driver, fairway woods, and irons. But in the last 10 years, once those clubs got consistent and accurate, I shifted my focus to wedges and putters.
I’ve put a ton of effort into wedges, experimenting with different types to figure out what works. The biggest thing I’ve learned? It’s all about how comfortable and familiar you are with your wedge. The club itself matters, sure, but you gotta know what kind of wedge head, bounce, face aggressive, shaft, and specs suit you best. When you’ve got a wedge that feels right, you’re confident enough to attack any situation—chipping, pitching, whatever. Sounds simple, but it took me over a decade to really figure it out through trial and error.
The first step to mastering a wedge is reading the course’s soil conditions. Is the ground hard or soft? If it’s hard, you don’t want to dig too deep into the turf—your club will get stuck, and you’ll either thin the shot or send it flying too far. On soft ground, if you scoop up too much dirt, the soil just eats up your club’s power, and the ball won’t go as far as you need or roll out enough. My wedges usually have around 8 degrees of bounce. On hard ground, I avoid digging in and just sweep through the ball, keeping the shot lower.
The biggest issue with wedges is coming up short. It’s a mental thing—when you’re chipping from, say, 40 yards out, a lot of us end up short of the green. So now, my main goal is to maximize distance control. To do that, you’ve gotta assess the situation: where’s your ball lying? Fairway’s no big deal. In the rough, is the ball sitting up or buried? If it’s sitting up, I might use a wedge with a bit strong loft than usual. Grass can make the clubface hit the ball at a steeper angle, which shortens the shot. If the ball’s buried, I’ll grab a higher-lofted wedge, dig into the ground, and pop it out. Sometimes, I’ll even use an iron to punch it out.

In bunkers, it’s simpler—just use the right loft for the sand and pop the ball out. If the sand’s coarse or fine, you adjust how much sand you take. Wet bunker after rain? The sand’s heavy, so I might use a putter or a 5-wood to get out clean instead of blasting it and overshooting.
The more experience you get, the more options you have—both in technique and club choice. Wedges aren’t always the go-to for short shots anymore. Sometimes, I’ll use a mid or short iron for shots inside 100 yards, and it’s often more consistent than a wedge. We get stuck thinking clubs have to be used a certain way, and that can mess us up. I test different clubs and approaches to see what’s possible, and that’s helped me build a playbook for different situations.
My strategy? The shorter the shot, the more creative you gotta get with club choice and technique. That’s why I don’t like sticking to the same tee box every time. I’ll play from the tips to push my distance and club selection skills, which also helps me get better at short-game creativity. If I play the same tees, my second shot’s usually an easy approach, and even if I miss, the chip’s predictable—not much chance to grow my short-game versatility.
Over the last three years, my short game inside 40 yards has gotten super creative. Wedges aren’t my default anymore—I mix in mid-irons, short irons, putters, even fairway woods, depending on the green, fairway, and lie. Honestly, the results are way better than just defaulting to a wedge. Wedges can make you short, and then you’re cursing yourself. A lot of low-handicap golfers say short game and putting are all about precision, and everyone’s got their own way of getting there.
But here’s the deal: don’t try to play like the pros. Watching tour players hit those perfect spinny chips or high flop shots is cool, but don’t kid yourself into thinking you can do that. Weekend golfers like us? We’re not playing on tour-level courses with perfect conditions. You’ve gotta mess up a bunch of short shots to get better. If you don’t experiment with different clubs and strategies, you’re missing out on the bigger picture of golf. There’s no one right way—it’s all about figuring out what works for you.
