The golf season has finally started, so I’m back to playing every weekend. Today I picked Spring Lake Golf Course out on Long Island. It’s about a one-hour drive from Flushing. My tee time was 9:05. I just went on Google Maps, looked for courses I haven’t played yet that still had openings, and booked it.

Since I have to work during the week, I can only play on weekends, and it’s honestly painful. The courses are packed, a lot of the players are beginners/high handicappers, and the pace is super slow. If you finish in five hours, you should thank the golf gods. At least when you tee off in the morning, you still have the afternoon free for family stuff.

Today I got paired with a really good player — just the two of us. Even though we were playing fast, there was a foursome in front, so we still had to wait a lot. Speed was definitely not in the cards today. First of all, there was no marshal on the course at all. The front nine wasn’t too bad — we were waiting about 5 to 10 minutes per shot. But the back nine was brutal, 15 to 20 minutes every time. So annoying!

The guy I was playing with is from Washington DC. He kept complaining the whole round. He said he’s played a few courses on Long Island and doesn’t like any of them. Yesterday he played another course — took 5 hours in the morning, then went out again at 2:30 pm and finished in just 3 hours. I asked why it was so much faster — obviously because most people were already on the back nine by then.

He’s been playing for 30 years, I’ve got 20+, so we’re both old heads. We just chatted the whole round and didn’t really get competitive. Playing with a good player is great because you get to watch their swing, ball flight, and how they read greens. My driver and irons (fairways and GIR) were actually more consistent than his, but his short game and putting were on another level.

He saw my clubs and noticed they’re all custom. He asked about my Fujikura AXIOM iron shafts. I told him they’re excellent — way better spin control and stability than steel, and I’m getting about 10 extra yards. He said he’s thinking of switching to the 125 S. Right now he’s using KBS Tour Lite 105, but he thinks it’s too light. The guy is 2.5 times my size, so yeah, makes sense!

I suggested he should go to a shop and test them properly. He’s a serious player too — his woods are Tour AD, fairway is Ventus Red. Total gearhead. His swing is classic power fade, like Bubba Watson style. This big American dude was playing the white tees while I played the blues, and my distance was right there with his. I’m telling you, his clubs must be holding him back.

I was debuting my new GT2 driver with the Fujikura Speeder NX Gold 5S shaft today — first time playing 18 holes with it. Man, it was money! On the blue tees (around 6500+ yards) and white tees (6000+), my distance matched his perfectly. My irons are just as solid as my woods now. I hit about 50% GIR, and even when I missed, I was still near the green.

The fairways at Spring Lake are pretty narrow. If you miss the line, you’re in the trees, and that usually costs an extra shot. I’m not trying to be a hero and attack pins anymore — I play smart, get it out there, and usually end up with par or bogey.

Even though the blue tees are 6500+, I barely used my fairway wood except on par 5s. The GT2 has so much power. A lot of the par 4s are over 400 yards and I was still going in with irons. Totally smoked my old Ventus TR Black setup.

I was walking while he was riding, so by the last five holes my legs and upper body were getting really stiff. Had to stretch a bit before shots. Over 50 now… the body just doesn’t recover like it used to.

He said he shot 3-under yesterday, but today he probably ended up around 5-over. The bunkers have fine sand — you really have to dig in to get the ball out. I was in twice. One was a par 3 where the pin was behind the bunker. I went straight at it, landed on the edge, and it bounced back into the sand. The bunkers are placed really cleverly. For average players, direction control and shot shaping are tested hard here. White tees would’ve been much easier for me.
