Strength drops noticeably, and the trend keeps going until you feel it. Of course heads and shafts both need replacing—not just when broken, but when performance drops to where you can't stand it. Like upgrading your phone or computer—not because it's dead, but because it's slow and annoying. Expensive shafts have zero direct link to more distance. That's just self-delusion or marketing BS. 'I spent big money so it must go farther'—nah, that's a scam.

Finally, flight characteristics—this ties straight to performance and distance. Flight decides your total yardage. Modern custom fitting gets picky about details: spin rate, height, landing angle, etc. Flight style = distance. Years ago I chased high flight because pros hit it high—they have the power to launch it up, and high flight uses air lift and spin for max carry.

But for regular golfers? I don't think so anymore. Why? Limited speed and power. High ball flight actually hurts you—more drag, less efficient carry because energy runs out. Six years ago I dropped loft from 10.5° to 9°, switched to mid or low launch shafts, mid-to-low spin. My distance optimized.

Lower trajectory doesn't lose much carry, and thanks to better materials/tech, the ball still flies farther while staying low. Lower landing angle = more roll. High flight usually means high spin—we're not pros with monster speed. High spin + high landing = short roll. I realized this 7–8 years ago, so I lower everything. Even if carry drops 10–15 yards, I pick up 20+ yards of roll—total distance still wins.

Quick mindset shift: if your swing speed isn't fast, forget those 'performance' shafts hyped for low launch/low spin/high stiffness. Adjust instead: go lighter weight, softer flex versions of them. That can help your results. But if your natural flight is already low or unstable (hand-dominated swing), don't force it—those shafts probably aren't for you. If your flight is consistent though, even with handsy swings, you can use this approach for best distance.

That's my roundup of what I've learned and figured out over the years—a big-picture guide. For specific setups or products, go to an experienced fitter. Lots of fitters out there don't really get the details—they're just selling and assembling for cash. They'll sometimes rain on your parade: 'Your speed's low, flight's low, even with roll it won't help much.' But ideal height varies person to person. You gotta know your current flight and how much you can lower it safely for extra roll.

I've got tons of different heads and shafts to mix and compare, so I know this stuff works for regular golfers. The key is the fitter's real knowledge and experience with specs—can't skip either. These insights come from a guy with too much free time messing around with gear to kill time. You have to keep investing in and learning products to really understand.

Driver heads are super mature now—little room left for big gains. The real upside is in shafts. Keep experimenting and trying new paths—that's where you'll see breakthroughs. That's the future of custom club building!"
