From my own experience, it's really tough. So it's totally normal and reasonable to allow for some swing mistakes. The key factors for controlling the club are length, weight, balance, and feel. Sounds simple, but in practice it's super hard. From all my custom fittings, very few golfers actually know their own specs. And even worse—those specs aren't static. People age, bodies weaken, swing quality drops. So the setup that works great today won't be right in two years when you buy a new driver and slap the same specs on it. That's the biggest headache—there's no universal standard.
A lot of off-the-rack clubs or even custom ones aren't suitable or logical. You might get great results in a fitting session, but I feel like most fittings don't consider everything fully. You can't just go by 'what looked good that day.' You can't hit balls forever in perfect conditions. Those fitting numbers come when you're fresh and full of energy. But what about hole 14 or 15 when you're tired? Or you went to bed at 2 a.m. and teed off at 6 a.m.? Same specs then? Mistakes are guaranteed—topping it, hitting heel/toe, sweet spot becomes a myth.
Control = being able to manage the club under most body and course conditions. Bottom line: most golfers' driver specs just aren't right for them. For the last 15 years, my drivers have been 44.5" or shorter. Last 6 years? 44". My distance, consistency, and results have been the best ever—lowest mishits, almost zero OB. Don't tell me pros use 45" or 45.5"—they train like crazy, diet, practice hours every day, and have natural athletic gifts. You're an average guy—no extra talent, less practice time (more overtime or beers with friends), zero gym time—and you wanna copy their specs? Come on, where'd that idea come from?
Now forgiveness. It's not just the head. The head helps correct some issues at impact—like face open/closed, spin control, etc. But once the ball's in the air, the shaft's characteristics take over big time. Kick point, tip stiffness, bend profile, recovery—they all directly affect contact and flight path. Modern shaft materials let you keep (or reduce) weight while getting better strength, less excess spin.
With launch monitors everywhere now, data shows your problems clearly. Even if you know your swing's off, if the shaft minimizes the damage, that's huge credit to the shaft. A lot of guys notice: new club feels amazing with great forgiveness, but after a while distance drops, and mishits don't recover anymore. Why? The shaft gets 'played out'—softens over time. Even if it doesn't break, high usage shortens its peak performance window.
