This year, I picked up a new fairway wood. I’d tried the BB4 before, but it was just a demo club a buddy let me hit, so I didn’t get much time to mess with it or customize it. When I was back in Taipei, I figured, why not grab one to play around with? The clubhead’s pretty round, kinda like a steamed bun, and the face is super square. It’s got that classic Japanese boutique brand vibe. Coming from American-style flatter clubheads, it took some getting used to. I think it works better shorter, so I went with my standard 44-inch fairway wood length. With that setup, the visual at address feels just right. I tested it out alongside my Callaway Elyte, taking both woods out on the course—each one for nine holes—to see how they stack up.
For the shaft, I went with a Fujikura Speeder 569 IV. I wanted a lower trajectory, and this shaft delivers that. The Speeder series is my go-to—top-notch stability and feel. It pairs well with the BB4. For the grip, I chose a black Pure rubber grip from the States. The whole setup is sleek, all-black, super solid look. I’ve been hitting this club for about five months now, and honestly, it’s not as stable or long as my American woods. When I first tested the BB4, I wasn’t blown away despite all the hype online. After using it for a while, it’s just… okay.
The ball flight’s mid-trajectory, and the feedback on solid hits feels good. The launch angle’s a bit high, over 15 degrees, even though the head’s set at 9 degrees. The center of gravity is low and back, which pushes the launch angle up. The shaft gives a mid-trajectory too, with a slight pop in height mid-flight, but it doesn’t keep climbing. Ball speed’s decent but not as fast as my Callaway AI Smoke or Elyte. If you only hit the BB4, you might think it’s a beast, but side-by-side, it’s just alright. One issue is the ball loses steam at the end of the flight, so distance tops out around 220 yards.
Off-center hits feel harsh—you know when you miss the sweet spot. The square face makes it tougher to hit the sweet spot compared to American flat-faced woods, which is why I lean toward those. The square head also makes it easier to dig into the ground, especially if you’re not used to it. The weight’s more concentrated, so if you’re swinging manually, you might clip the turf before or during impact, messing up your direction and distance. Even if you match the length and weight to your usual specs, it still feels off.
The shaft’s great—fast swing speed—but it’s stiff, with no clear flex or kick point. That’s why it doesn’t generate much backspin, and the roll-out’s weak, like 10-20 yards, which is a bit of a letdown. Overall, the specs are close to my other clubs, but the head’s control and precision just don’t match American woods, so the distance isn’t there either. It’s super noticeable. After three holes, I’m usually done and switch back to my Elyte or AI Smoke.
