The Blue greens are smaller with less slope, which gives you a fighting chance — most were two-putt greens. But between the tight fairways, water hazards, ocean, and small greens, you need serious accuracy off the tee and with irons. Add strong wind and it becomes brutal.
There are quite a few water hazards and ocean carries on Blue. Miss the fairway even a little and your ball’s gone. There are also patches of knee-high rough and fescue. I lost three balls today but found five others, so I actually came out ahead on balls.
Overall verdict:
This is a tough course. Red has very difficult greens, Blue has beautiful scenery but the wind and difficulty can get ridiculous. From the white tees with no wind, it’s probably pretty playable. For average players, bring extra balls — you’ll lose some to water or deep rough.
Personally, I think playing the Blue tees at around 6,600 yards is a real test of your game — distance, accuracy, and course management. One bad drive and you start questioning everything. Shooting in the mid-80s or better from the blues here is solid golf.
I’ll keep Timber Point on my list. The price is similar to other courses I like, and it definitely has character. If your driving and long irons aren’t reliable right now, maybe skip it. And if your putting isn’t good, definitely remove it from your map — the greens aren’t big, but the slopes will make you curse. Today the greens were running about 8-9 on the Stimpmeter — pretty reasonable actually. I even had three one-putts.
One downside though: There’s one spot (I forget which hole) where the green is really close to the next tee box. Others hit two balls right into that area from the tee — scared the crap out of me. I almost wanted to wear a helmet. The group behind didn’t yell “fore” either. The design is a bit flawed there — just some small bushes, no real trees to block the balls. So even though I like the course, I probably won’t play it too often. Getting hit by a ball would really suck.
The round took 4 hours and 10 minutes — pretty good for a Saturday morning. Not too crowded either. Probably because it’s a bit out of the way, so most players are locals. The difficulty is legit — it punishes high handicaps and anyone who can’t hit it straight.
As long as it’s a good course, I don’t mind driving a bit further. Now that summer’s here, after 10 a.m. it gets hot, so I’ll need to start bringing sunscreen and proper gear so I don’t get heatstroke.
