Pine Ridge Golf Course on Long Island, New York!
These past two weeks I’ve been sick with a cold and allergies, so I’ve been dying to play golf. My hands were super itchy. Over Memorial Day weekend, I went online looking for courses and picked Pine Ridge. I’ve never played it before, but it’s really close to Spring Lake, where I played last time.
The Google reviews were only around 3.3 stars, which made me a bit worried. But I still booked a 7:30am tee time on Saturday, hoping to finish before noon. Last time at Spring Lake it took over five hours, so I really didn’t want a repeat of that disaster.
The drive from Flushing took about 70 minutes. When I got there, it was drizzling lightly. The forecast said no rain from 9am to 12pm, but it actually rained lightly the whole time. The parking lot was almost empty — which was great. Looks like the rain scared a lot of people away.
I arrived half an hour early, and they let me tee off 15 minutes sooner. I got paired with three other guys: a father and son, and another solo player like me. None of us had played the course before except the father-son duo. They play here every weekend in the mornings, so they basically became my personal GPS.
I played from the Blue tees — around 6,100 yards. The Black tees are 6,500, but I didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew on a new course. I used my TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver the whole 18 holes. Honestly, I wasn’t very comfortable with it. It doesn’t have the forgiveness of my GT2. Almost every time I hit a slight fade or draw, the ball ended up under the trees. My fairway accuracy was terrible — only about 30%.
This course has ridiculously narrow fairways. One small mistake and you’re in the woods. Both sides are lined with dense trees — it feels like playing Augusta National. Super stressful off the tee. Thankfully, my irons were on fire today. Because of the rain, the ball wasn’t rolling much, so I was mostly hitting 7-iron or pitching wedge for my second shots. I ended up with 70% GIR.
I really like the design of this course. Even though it’s only 6,100 yards, it’s very challenging and tests your accuracy. You need precise tee shots — no room for error, or you’re straight into the trees. The greens are either small or long and narrow, like the width of a car. If your distance control is off, you’re screwed. The father and son were struggling too — they were either in the trees or walking through them!
Most holes are doglegs left or right, and you often can’t see the pin from the tee box. It’s a nightmare if it’s your first time. But at least the fairways aren’t super hilly. The bunkers were interesting. I didn’t go in many, but the sand is quite fine, so you need a good swing to get out. They’re also long and strategically placed — very easy to find if you’re not accurate. Super fun though!
The greens are another highlight. The front nine has smaller greens, while the back nine has long, narrow ones that test your distance control. Some are over 30 yards deep and have two tiers with about half a person’s height difference.
Putting was tough. They were punching the greens that day, but the quality was still excellent. They rolled true and the speed was around 8. I was very happy with them. I even made two long putts — that felt amazing!
My driver distance was around 230–250 yards. Some holes were downhill so the ball rolled a bit. Launch angle was about 15-16 degrees with the Fujikura Ventus Blue 6X. Ball speed was good and it felt powerful, but the forgiveness is low.
