The weather started getting hot in June, so for my first round of the month I picked Timber Point Golf Course. It’s a classic links-style course on the south shore of Long Island, right by the ocean. I teed off at 7:40 a.m. — about an hour’s drive from Flushing. I was paired with a couple who live nearby and know the course really well, so they basically became my personal GPS.
The morning temperature was in the low 70s — super comfortable. I played the Red and Blue courses from the blue tees. Red was about 3,300 yards, Blue around 3,341, so together it was over 6,600 yards. That’s actually a decent test.
I started on the front nine (Red course). The fairways weren’t too bad, and after most drives I was left with less than 100 yards in — usually a pitching wedge or 52-degree wedge. But the greens on Red are tricky. They’re not pretty big with some serious slopes, almost half a person high in places. The pins were placed on these nasty slopes. Three-putting was normal, two-putting felt amazing. My first three holes were all three-putts — my confidence was completely gone.
Some fairways are super narrow — you start questioning your life choices. If you miss them, you’re just heading straight into the long grass or woods to look for your ball. The par 3s are no gift either. There’s elevation change between the tee and the green, and bunkers guarding both sides. If you don’t have good accuracy, you’re going bunker hunting or long grass searching.
The bunkers aren’t huge, but they feel magnetic. Hit it a little short or a little offline and you’re in the sand. The Red course feels like an old-school layout — narrow fairways, small greens, very punishing. If you miss even a bit, your short game decides whether you make bogey or save par. I started using my fairway wood to run balls onto the greens — it worked sometimes, sometimes not. I need to do that more.
The back nine (Blue course) is proper links golf. The holes run right along the ocean — the views are like a painting. The wind was really strong. You had to club up a lot to reach the greens. On the 15th hole, a 207-yard par 3 with the ocean right behind the green, I had a right-to-left wind. I hit my 3-wood (normally 220-230 yards) aiming at the right bunker, but the wind pushed it all the way into the left bunker. That bunker was like a pot bunker from The Open — brutal. I walked off with a bogey (+1).
