I kinda regret buying the LS version — I only got it because the head looks nice. It’s punishing! This driver performs best on wide fairways in good weather. Compared to the Titleist GT2 or Callaway drivers, it’s just not as user-friendly. Feels like I’m playing with a blade iron.
I used TaylorMade TP5 balls today. The feel was great — solid and sticky — but there was too much spin. The ball didn’t fly as well as my usual Pro V1, and I had more side spin. I was suffering the whole round. Finally, on the last four holes, I switched to Pro V1 and damn — everything came back to life! I gained over 10 yards off the tee and with irons. Normally my 7-iron goes 155 yards with Pro V1, but with TP5 I was barely hitting 145. So frustrating!
Luckily, I didn’t lose any balls today. Even when I hit into the woods, I could find them easily.
I have to give this course credit for maintenance. The fairways, greens, and tree trimming were all well done. I didn’t have any branches blocking my line to the pin. Because of the rain, there weren’t many people, so we played through without waiting. We finished at 11:40am — only 4 hours and 20 minutes. That’s really good for a long weekend. The light rain actually made it comfortable — no sun, no sunburn.
The best part was the group. Everyone was super friendly and chatty. The son was hilarious — he had us laughing the whole round. He could’ve been a comedian. This was probably the most fun and relaxed round I’ve had all year.
I’m really starting to enjoy this golf journey more and more. I’m improving bit by bit, understanding my clubs better, and getting better at fitting and matching equipment.
Pine Ridge is now on my “pocket list” along with Sunken Meadow and Smithtown Landing. These courses have clear character, good prices, and actually test your game. Some expensive courses are always crowded and poorly maintained — you finish angry with no enjoyment. Those are one-and-done courses.
Bottom line: The “tight tree-lined” design is Pine Ridge’s signature. If your accuracy off the tee and with irons isn’t solid, don’t come here — it will destroy your confidence. Even though Google gives it low ratings, I personally think it’s at least a 4.5 out of 5. Google reviews can be really misleading. Last time I played Spring Lake (which had higher ratings) and it was way worse — super wide open, like a driving range.
If your handicap is 20+, I’d probably skip this one. It’s not very beginner-friendly.
