Swan lake golf club!

Swan Lake Golf Club, Long Island, New York!

Today's Juneteenth, the first day of a three-day weekend. I picked Swan Lake Golf Club to play — it's a bit inland on Long Island, pretty close to Shinnecock, where the US Open's being played this week. Drive from Flushing took about an hour and ten minutes, and man, the highway was packed at six in the morning, and just as bad coming back — stop and go the whole way. That's all the US Open traffic. There are a ton of die-hard golf fans out in the New England area, and this was basically a pilgrimage convoy headed to the Open — buying souvenirs, paying their respects, picking up a lucky charm for a good scoring season. Good thing my tee time was 7:30 AM, so I missed the worst of the traffic on the way out, but the drive home in the afternoon was an absolute disaster.

One small hiccup though — the booking site didn't mention that on weekends and holidays, carts are mandatory. No pushing your own cart allowed. I only found out when I checked in. Kind of annoyed since there was no notice on the booking page, but nothing to do but accept it. Guess I'll just call it my Father's Day gift to myself. I played with three other guys today — they're from New Jersey, in town specifically for the US Open, watching tomorrow's round. So today they're playing two rounds back to back, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, with the afternoon round at a links-style course right next to Shinnecock. Talk about devoted pilgrims — they live right next door in New Jersey and still planned a full two-day-one-night Long Island golf trip plus the US Open. Looked like something straight out of a travel agency's copy-paste itinerary. Way too professional.

I played the white tees today, total 6,300 yards — a decent length for whites. Blue tees run 6,800 yards. First time at this course, so I started from the whites. The weather this morning was fantastic, low 70 degree, not much sun, just a really comfortable day for golf. The fairways here are super narrow — drift even a little and you're in the trees or out of bounds. There are bunkers scattered down the middle of most fairways too, so it's either the woods, the sand, or worse — OB or water. Basically your tee shot only has about a 15-yard margin for error. Anything beyond that and you're pretty much in trouble.

I brought out the Ping G440K driver with a Fujikura TR Speeder shaft today, and I'm really glad I did. The 440K's forgiveness is incredible — it lets you get away with some deviation, as long as it's within that 15-yard window. Genuinely had some close calls but came out fine. Distance-wise though, kind of disappointing — spin was a bit excessive, ball would bounce twice and just stop. Hit the sweet spot a few times but distance wasn't quite what I expected. Might also be because I was playing the Callaway Chrome Soft X today — firmer, less spin, ball flies straight without dropping off, but I wasn't getting the rollout I wanted. Still, overall the 440K's performance was completely manageable. The forgiveness is just super great.

Chrome Soft X really doesn't go as far as the Pro V1. Because of that, I kept having to pull out mid-irons or fairway woods for my second shots, and to make it worse, my irons just weren't on today. Honestly, it's rare to have every part of your game clicking — there's always some piece that lags behind. The course design is tricky and demands skill — not many dogleg holes, but you still can't see the green from the tee box, because the fairways are cleverly designed with bunkers, trees, rough, and elevation changes that block your sightline. Really tests your technique and consistency. I went into the sand three times today — the bunkers aren't huge and pretty easy to escape from. The sand grain is medium-sized, generally easy to dig into, though a few bunkers had been watered down, making them harder to play out of — something to watch for.

And then there's the greens — the trickiest part, with these narrow, elevated "turret" style greens. They're only about 15 to 20 yards wide, but over 30 yards long. Even crazier, there's about a 60 cm elevation change within some greens. The first few holes were tough to putt because the greens sit on slopes — if you can't read greens or don't know how to handle slope putts, you're guaranteed three-putts. All the front-nine greens are this narrow shape, which makes approach shots brutally challenging — drift even slightly off-target and you're in a bunker or the rough on a slope. So my iron play felt pretty frustrating today, since even small misses landed me on a slope or in the long grass around the green.
