March is almost here, and this winter in New York has been especially cold. In the past two months, there hasn't been a single day with temperatures reaching 50°F. It’s been crazy cold—every day has been below freezing or just barely above, and it’s been snowing every week. I don’t even remember what it feels like to play golf anymore.
Finally, today it warmed up to around 50°F. Yesterday, the golf shop notified me that my new putter and driver had arrived, so I went to pick them up and hit the range to try them out. Since I haven’t touched my clubs in three months, I also took the time to stretch properly and get ready to start playing again next month.
This time, I ordered the Callaway Elyte driver and Scotty Cameron’s new Phantom 5.2 putter. Even though I already have the 5.5, the 5.2 has a traditional neck design, which allows me to swap in a carbon shaft. So I decided to get one and test it out with a different shaft. The Phantom 5.2 head is about 10-15% smaller than the 5.5, which is quite noticeable visually. My plan is to build the 5.2 into a mid-length putter with 15" putter grip, due to its head weight being over 370g, a mid-length setup should offer better control.
As for the Elyte, its head is a bit larger than the previous AI Smoke model. off visually, but other than that, I don’t think there are any major differences. I took it straight to the range to hit a few shots and see how it felt. The Elyte’s feedback feels more solid, and I can really feel the clubface rebounding at impact. It’s actually quite fun and satisfying to hit. The ball speed is fast, though I don’t notice much difference compared to the Smoke. I’ll need to test it out on the course to see how it really performs. But in terms of forgiveness, it’s just like the Smoke—it launches straight and hot, which is pretty exciting.
After hitting some shots, I went over to the putting green to test out the new Phantom 5.2. Since the head is smaller, it feels a bit heavier in the hands when putting. But I think that’s just because I’m used to lighter-headed putters—it’s not really an issue with the 5.2 itself. The feedback feels firmer, likely due to the stainless steel construction, so it doesn’t feel as soft as the 5.5 when rolling the ball. Also, since this putter still has a steel shaft, I noticed that the ball loses speed and stops faster towards the end of the roll.
When I got home, I immediately started swapping out the shaft to customize the specs and see if the reborn 5.2 would meet my expectations. Of course, I also need to re-shaft the Elyte. I’ll probably go with the Fujikura Ventus 2024 Blue 5S to see if it improves both the feedback and overall performance.
This year, I’ll be picking up more new golf gear to play around with, so there will be plenty of testing and reviews coming soon. Looking forward to sharing more!
