I often get emails from golfers asking about club-related questions or custom fitting needs. However, since I’m currently living in New York, I can’t meet with them face-to-face to discuss, exchange ideas, or fitting clubs together. So today, I want to talk about how you can evaluate the professionalism and expertise of a club fitter in your area. This is important because the world of club customization is complex, and just because someone has been in the business for a long time doesn’t automatically make them more professional or knowledgeable. The key is how deeply they’ve invested in their craft.
First off, a good fitter needs to have genuine passion for golf equipment. It can’t just be about running a business or selling products. Without this passion, they won’t have the depth of understanding required for analyzing products or making proper customizations. For example, every year, new clubs are released. If a fitter isn’t familiar with or hasn’t tried the latest models, how can they explain the features, strengths, and weaknesses to golfers? That’s also why I constantly buy and test new clubs myself—it’s not about memorizing manufacturers' product descriptions but sharing real insights from personal experience. I've seen fitters who give very shallow feedback like, "It’s easy to play," or "It goes far." What exactly makes it easy to play? What materials or technology contribute to the good feel?
A knowledgeable fitter doesn’t deal in absolutes. Instead, they understand the nuances—club fitting is largely about compensating for shortcomings in the head, shaft, or grip to create the best balance. This relies entirely on the fitter’s technical expertise. A skilled fitter can ensure the final result aligns with the golfer’s expectations. Unfortunately, I’ve heard from golfers who were disappointed with their custom clubs because they turned out completely different from what was promised. Some fitters even shift the blame onto the golfer, claiming it’s their swing, physical condition, or other external factors.
To me, this is unacceptable. A fitter should be able to stand by their work and meet the golfer’s expectations. Golfers come to you because they need help solving problems with their game. If you can’t take responsibility for the results, you’re just doing assembly work, not true customization. Club fitting is a complex, professional process that requires real expertise—it’s not about tricking people with empty talk. And it’s certainly not about handing golfers a bunch of clubs to try and hoping something sticks. That’s neither efficient nor professional.
