March is almost coming to an end, and the weather is slowly warming up. Of course, that got me itching to play. For my first round of the year, I chose Bethpage Yellow Course to test my skills. Since my friend booked a 12 PM tee time, I figured the temperature would hit around 10°C (50°F), but the wind turned out to be a major factor. When we got to the tee box, the wind was so crazy it felt like a typhoon back in Taiwan—I could barely stand still, and our pushcarts were blown over several times! My first shot was a pull to the left, but luckily, the fairway is wide, making it very forgiving for beginners. The course doesn’t have many trees separating the fairways, so even if you slice or hook the ball, it’s not a big deal.

The Yellow Course stretches over 6,000 yards. The front nine was manageable, but starting from hole 10 on the back nine, things got tricky. They’re doing renovations because the Ryder Cup is being held here this year, so they completely tore down the 10th hole to build grandstands. It used to be a par 5, but they temporarily turned it into a par 3, which was a bit of a buzzkill. Overall, the course design lets you see the greens and flagsticks clearly, which helps with strategizing and shot selection. It’s definitely a friendly course for golfers. In the U.S., most course designs give you a clear view of the green, which is something that’s almost unheard of in Asia!

Today, I used my new Callaway Elyte and Japan Progress BB4 drivers. The Elyte’s stability is just like its brother, the Ai Smoke, with impressive sidespin suppression. The ball flies straight off the face and rolls well after landing, giving me a consistent distance of 250-280 yards. It gave me a lot of confidence… but also made things a little boring! As for the BB4, a Japanese driver head, it didn’t feel as solid as the Elyte, and the distance wasn’t as long either. The sidespin control was just average. But I can’t really blame the BB4—most Japanese drivers I’ve tried aren’t designed to be easy to hit.

Playing at Bethpage today was really tough because of the wind. It reminded me of playing at Taiwan’s North Coast Golf Course in winter, where the wind can easily steal 30 yards from your shots. That same feeling was completely recreated at Bethpage today. I wasn’t even trying to hit low trajectories—I just wanted to see how much the wind would affect the distance. On some holes, I lost over 30 yards. For instance, I had a 185-yard shot to the pin, but even with a 3-wood, I only made it to the edge of the green. My 3-wood normally goes 220 yards, but today it was barely reaching 180 yards.

The Yellow Course demands distance, and its layout feels more like a championship course, with several fairways featuring slopes. If you miss the landing zone, you’re almost guaranteed to add 1-2 extra strokes. The greens aren’t very big, so hitting them is a bit challenging. However, I managed to hit over 50% of the greens in regulation with my approach shots. But the real struggle was on the greens—I didn’t make many one-putts and ended up with quite a few three-putts. I was also testing out my new putter, the Scotty Cameron Phantom 5.2, so I’m still getting used to its feel.
