How to setup your putter!

Let’s talk about putters today—mainly how to choose and set up a putter. I often share my experiences with different putters from a product perspective. The putter is a club that everyone can master, but choosing the right head and setup is something many people don’t fully understand. Knowing these principles is crucial for finding the right specifications for you.

First, putter heads generally fall into two categories. The first is the traditional blade-style putter, like the Newport, with a simple design.

The advantage of this type of putter is that it’s easy to control and offers great feel. Distance control is relatively simple because the head is smaller or in a straight-line design, making directional control highly demanding. Even a slight misalignment of the face can cause mishits. This type of putter requires a very stable stroke, and grip strength plays a key role. Many golfers, including myself, struggle with consistency, especially on the last few holes, when fatigue sets in, and grip control weakens, causing the putter face to misalign.

Blade putter heads typically weigh between 330-360g. Traditional models used to be around 330-340g, but in the last decade, putter head weights have increased by about 10-15g. Many putters now come with adjustable weight screws, allowing golfers to tweak head weight. Players who rely more on their arms for putting often prefer heavier heads because they need to feel the weight throughout the stroke. However, this can also lead to grip endurance issues.

Personally, I prefer traditional blade putters in the 330-340g range with a shorter length for better control. This is all about physics—your grip position needs to match the putter head weight to maintain balance. To move the putter from a stationary position, you need to generate more force than the head weight. For example, if your putter head weighs 350g, you must apply more than 350g of force to initiate movement.

Blade-style putters are best suited for players who don’t rely solely on their arms and grip strength for putting. Instead, using a pendulum motion with the shoulders is ideal. If the putter head is too heavy, the shoulders may struggle to drive the motion, forcing the arms to compensate. That’s why putter head weight must match your stroke style—it’s not just about going heavier; it’s about how you generate force.

Another factor is putter length. If you naturally grip the putter near the end of the handle and use a shoulder-driven stroke, the total weight/swing weight shouldn’t be too high. An overly heavy putter can prevent your shoulders from initiating the stroke smoothly, forcing you to rely on other body parts like the arms or upper body, which can lead to inconsistency and coordination issues.
