Starting Strong: How Preparation and a Clear Mind Make Your First Holes Your Best
Every time I tee it up on the first hole, what's actually going through your head? Like — "Let me show everyone what my driver can do", or "Let me try that swing tweak I worked on yesterday", or "I wonder how far this new driver goes"…
Honestly? None of that. I never step onto the tee box with a specific agenda. What I do is look at the scorecard, check the hole layout, then actually look down the fairway and find the green. I loosen up a little, take some practice swings, get my direction dialed in — and then just hit the ball.
Sometimes I'll think about a small swing detail I want to work on. I'll try to feel it during my practice swings. But here's the thing — the moment I think too hard about it, I'm done. It falls apart completely. I also switch drivers almost every round, so I can't really lean on any one club. I have to rely on my swing, not the equipment.
But honestly, when I don't think at all and just swing the way I always do? That's when I get the best results. And here's something funny about me — my first 3 to 5 holes are usually my best. I'm locked in, my swing feels automatic, I'm completely trusting my body. People who play with me those first few holes? They're not going to bet against me. It's almost intimidating.
Most golfers are the opposite — they need 3 to 5 holes just to warm up and find their rhythm. I'm wired differently. I think it's because I've built a solid foundation over the years, and I consistently stretch and run to keep my body ready. So when I step on the course, my body's already prepared to swing without fighting me.
Those early holes actually work in my favor physically too. My body isn't fully loose yet, so there's no temptation to swing hard or chase speed. I just make a smooth, natural swing — and that's where the consistency comes from. Bottom line: you don't need 100% power to play good golf. If your 60 to 70 percent swing is stable and repeatable, you're going to be just fine. And when you do mis-hit, the damage is manageable. It's when you try to explode that things go sideways — and that's completely predictable.
For my irons and short game in those early holes, I focus on triggering the right muscle memory. I take a few extra practice swings to confirm my contact and follow-through feel right before I pull the trigger. I used to skip this step entirely — I'd grab the club and just go, like I was trying to be a tour pro. I'd completely ignore the basics. The result? Ugly iron shots.
