There was one par 5 where my second shot with a 3-wood landed right in front of the green — felt great! But then I get up there and the ball's gone. Look, I can accept a ball just disappearing, but this? Not okay. Because the course has so few trees, holes are separated but it's easy to drift onto the wrong fairway if you're off line. So I kept seeing other groups wander over onto my fairway and just hit away — that explains exactly where my balls kept going. Nobody out there bothers carrying their own markers or checking — they just see a ball and swing.

The fairways here are seriously narrow and tough, greens are small too, and the bunkers are placed right where shots tend to land. Very similar to Timber Point. Not an especially hard course overall, just the kind of place you only really need to play once — no need to play it repeatedly. And like I said, with balls constantly disappearing, the caliber of golfers here was the worst I've seen — I don't think I'll be coming back.

A few holes have dogleg fairways where you can barely see the green from the tee, so using a fairway wood or long iron for the approach works better. Especially from the white tees — you don't need much distance since the fairway bends anyway. My driver was working great distance-wise today, and for approach shots mid and short irons did the job — fairway woods performed well too, so distance really wasn't an issue.

As for the greens, speed was about an 8. Some of them have really challenging slopes, but I've got enough experience that pins on slopes like that don't throw me off — I can still handle the putts. Front nine I had two long putts, and pretty much sank everything else within a foot of the hole — really happy with how my putting held up today.

About five holes in it started drizzling, and by the last hole it turned into a downpour, so we had to call it and head in. Didn't get to play the back nine, but honestly the course's style doesn't change much throughout, and I've played similar layouts before, so I wasn't too broken up about missing it. The storm hit hard and fast — everyone rushed back to the clubhouse, round over. And that afternoon storm ended up flooding parts of New York again.

One more thing I really couldn't stand — the mosquitoes were insane. Anywhere near bushes or tall grass, they'd just latch onto your legs, hands, neck like they were starving. Total bloodsuckers, impossible to shake off. I'd finish a swing and still have mosquitoes stuck on me, had to smack them off. Hands down the worst mosquito situation I've experienced at any course in the US.

Bottom line — this course is pretty much on par with Timber Point, but personally I'd pick Timber Point over this one. So if this is the style of course you're into, just pick one of the two — no need to play both, they're priced about the same and located close to each other, and honestly similar enough that playing both is redundant. Plus, with how loosely people play here — the etiquette was just bad — that's another reason I lean toward Timber Point.

On the drive home, part of the highway was completely shut down from flooding, so I had to take local roads. Front nine took two hours, and the drive home took another two hours — felt like forever. By the time I got home the rain had stopped, so I finally got to unbox that golf bag I'd been waiting on — more on that another time. West Sayville gets a flat-out negative from me — not coming back. Feels like this place and I just don't vibe — today's whole mess was proof enough of that.
