West sayville GC

Long Island West Sayville GC

So I had a tee time booked for Saturday, July 18th, 10:20 AM at West Sayville on Long Island. The forecast said rain in the afternoon, so I was hoping to finish all 18 holes before 2pm. On top of that, the sky over New York's been looking pretty bizarre the last couple days because of the wildfires up in Canada — air quality's been terrible. I just wanted to get the round done and get home. The course is about an hour's drive from Flushing, right near the coast, so I figured the wind would be brutal today — it's a classic links-style layout.

Before heading to the course, I swung by the post office to pick up a package — a caddie bag I'd recently ordered — then went straight to the course. The place reminded me a lot of Timber Point, which I'd played before. Checked in at the pro shop, and they ended up moving my tee time up 20 minutes. I got paired up with three senior golfers, one of them a woman, so the pace was nice and relaxed. I played the blue tees today, total yardage around 6,500+, which is reasonable, but the fairways are narrow and the greens are small — really tests your accuracy. You can check out my Timber Point article for reference on that style of course.

Today I had my Titleist GT2 driver with a Speeder Gold shaft in the bag, and man, my confidence off the tee was through the roof. I was hitting a slight fade all day but nothing too wild. But here's the weird part — a bunch of my shots just... disappeared. I couldn't find them anywhere. After a few holes I finally figured out what was going on: other golfers were hitting my balls. I honestly can't wrap my head around this. If you see a ball that isn't yours, fine, pick it up and put it in your bag or pocket — but to just straight up hit it away? That's just classless.

Case in point: I was playing a Callaway Chrome Soft. Hit my drive, couldn't find it. Then two holes later, I spotted it sitting right next to the green. There's no way that ball rolled there on its own — it went missing off the tee, so it should've been somewhere near the fairway, not anywhere close to that green. So basically, people out here just hit whatever ball they see, no matter whose it is. That's straight up thuggish behavior, totally unacceptable. A ball going missing, sure, that happens — but someone hitting it away on purpose? That's theft. My ball got straight up stolen. I've been golfing in the US for years and today was a first.

By the end of the round I'd lost four balls. It put me in a sour mood — not because I played badly, but because my balls kept vanishing or getting hit by other people. This course isn't heavily wooded, no thick rough to speak of, so balls shouldn't just go missing like that. But they did, even ones that landed clean on the fairway. I switched to different balls throughout the round and kept seeing them turn up on other fairways or near other greens. I was fuming.
